Millais

Local Community

As a school we are actively involved in a wide range of local community projects, some of which are outlined below.

Senior Citizens go Surfing!
During Autumn 2010 several girls from Year 9 acted as student trainers to twelve Senior Citizens from the local community teaching them basic computer skills, how to access and safely use the internet and also how to use email.

June and Alan Payn who attended the course said “From not knowing anything about computers we are now quite confident about using them. The girls who taught us were wonderful. They were all so kind and patient”

Student trainers Holly Bennett and Abbie James added “We really enjoyed working and talking with the older people. They were fun to teach and keen to learn and we looked forward to seeing them each week”

Millais provided the seven week “Introductory Computer Course” as a way of engaging the local community with the school, making use of the school’s Information Technology equipment.

Concert for Age Concern
On Monday 31 January 2011 a group of 10 talented musicians from years 9 and 10 performed an hour long concert of music ranging from modern to classical for elderly people attending the local Age Concern. The girls who organised the concert, with help from Mr Andy Skinner, willingly gave up hours of their spare time to plan the set list and practice the pieces.

The concert was a huge success with an Age Concern staff member commenting “Members thoroughly enjoyed the show and thought the girls were very professional and extremely talented. We would love to have them back for a repeat performance.”

An extensive Adult and Community Learning programme is also run on site and all our facilities are available for hire by local groups.
